I think one of...You're absolutely right about this. I think one of the best ways to develop characters in story-based games is to reveal backstory slowly. A character with a rich history that's revealed over time can add a lot of compelling material. <BR/><BR/>The revelation of some past action helps the player understand why a character behaves the way he/she does.
